Fly-Tipping in London: What to Do and How to Report It

Councils are legally required to clear fly-tipped waste on public land within a reasonable timeframe.

If waste is fly-tipped on your private land, the responsibility for clearing it falls on you — even though you didn't put it there. This applies to:

• Magistrates' court: Unlimited fines and/or up to 12 months imprisonment
• Crown court: Unlimited fines and/or up to 5 years imprisonment
• Vehicle seizure: Vehicles used for fly-tipping can be confiscated and crushed

Importantly, if you hire an unlicensed waste carrier and your waste ends up fly-tipped, you can be prosecuted. Always check your carrier is licensed.
